Why the Low FODMAP Diet Isn’t Working

Why the Low FODMAP Diet Isn’t Working for Your IBS Symptoms

Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything right for your IBS, but your symptoms just won’t improve?

You followed the low FODMAP diet, cut out the trigger foods, and planned your meals carefully. Yet you’re still bloated, uncomfortable, and frustrated. If you’re wondering why the low FODMAP diet isn’t working, you’re not alone. IBS diet frustration is very common, and it’s not your fault.

3 steps for a successful low FODMAP diet

Why the Low FODMAP Diet Can Stall

One of the biggest issues is staying in the elimination phase for too long. This phase is meant to be temporary (no longer than 2-6 weeks). Many people remain in this phase for months (and in many of my patients’ cases, years!). Staying on the elimination phase of the low FODMAP diet for an extended period can impact digestive health.

Another common problem is under-eating. With so many foods removed, it’s easy to miss out on fiber, calories, and key nutrients, which can lead to constipation, fatigue, and worsened digestive symptoms. Remember, you can’t heal a starved gut with more restriction. The less you eat the less your digestive system will function optimally.

Stress also plays a major role in how your IBS symptoms show up. IBS is closely tied to the gut–brain connection, and no diet can fully work if your nervous system is constantly on high alert.

Why More Restriction Isn’t the Answer

Cutting out more foods doesn’t always lead to more relief. In fact, over-restriction can increase food fear, reduce gut bacteria diversity, and make eating feel stressful instead of supportive.

What Helps Instead

Instead of adding more food rules, many people benefit from:

  • Eating enough throughout the day

  • Gradually reintroducing foods

  • Supporting digestion with regular meals and routines

  • Addressing stress and lifestyle factors (dehydration, diaphragmatic breathing, gentle movement, sleep hygiene, etc.)

Working with an IBS-trained dietitian can help guide safe reintroduction and personalization, using evidence-based practices.

Ready for a Different Approach?

If your low FODMAP diet isn’t working and you’re tired of feeling stuck, you don’t have to figure this out alone. A non-diet, individualized approach can help you feel better without endless restriction.

As a gut health dietitian who works with IBS clients every day, I see this pattern all the time. Most people don’t need more restrictions; they need better support.
